SAP ERP is an Enterprise Resource Planning software developed by the German company SAP SE. SAP ERP incorporates the key business functions of an organization. The latest version (SAP ERP 6.0) was made available in 2006. The most recent enhancement package (EHP8) for SAP ERP 6.0 was released in 2016.

SAP stands for Systems, Applications & Products in Data Processing.  SAP was founded by five German engineers (Dietmar Hopp, Klaus Tschira, Hans-Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, and Claus Wellenreuther) in 1972. SAP is an integrated system, which means that all SAP Modules are designed to share information and automatically create transactions based on various business processes. 

SAP R/3 is the client/server version of the software. The “3” in R/3 stands for the three-tire

SAP R/2 is the mainframe version of the software. The “2” stands for the two-tired mainframe architecture.
